Orange Melamine Clam Dish Ashtray by Alan Fletcher and Mebel for Habitat

£135.00

Designed in 1972 by graphic designer, Alan Fletcher, the Clam Ashtray is a true icon of 20th century design! A beautifully simple, yet ingenious design, it features two identical rounded halves with ribbed 'teeth', that fit neatly together to form a lidded storage container, or when split, two ashtrays; the 'teeth' intended to hold a cigarette or cigar.

We adore it's retro orange-red hue and as a piece that can be stylised and utilised in a number of ways.

Fletcher's original 'clam' design, dates from the late 1960s and was put into production by his design agency, Pentagram in 1972. His design, was later reissued in the 1990's and produced by Italian company Mebel, exclusively for Conran's Habitat stores. Each half is signed 'Mebel - Italy - Des A Fletcher' and bare becoming increasingly difficult to find, especially in good condition. Alan Fletcher is world renowned for his design work, famously for the branding for the Victoria and Albert museum, London.

We kindly ask you look closely at all our photos, using the zoom facility, as these naturally form part of the item's description.

Please be aware that your monitor, tablet, or mobile device may emulate colours/tones differently 'on screen' to that of the actual physical item, all of which are photographed and shown to the best of our abilities.
