RARE Antique Cheese Dome / Stilton Keeper

£65.00

This extremely characterful, Victorian Ironstone cheese dome, or Stilton keeper, is a very RARE piece. Sourced from the heart of the Staffordshire potteries, as yet, we haven't found another even remotely similar in design after extensive research.

For a lover of the 'perfectly-imperfect', it is hand-painted in a most striking floral design, accented with gilt 'sponged' detailing and gilt highlights. Featuring just the right amount of age, wear, patina and rich 'tea-staining' we think giving it a relaxed and most beautifully honest finish.

It would make the most wonderful of 'faded' display pieces in any farmhouse or country styled interior.

Key Points:
• A beautiful and very large cheese keeper
• Large, vented domed lid and under-plate
• Rich red-brown and bright blue tones
• Hand-painted textured florals and gilt
• Unmarked but highly likely of Staffordshire origin
• Characterful condition as below

Year of manufacture:
Victorian Era - c1880+

Origin:
Highly Likely England (Staffordshire)

Approx. Measurements:
W: 27cm (diameter)
H: 21cm (to top of handle)

Condition:
In fair vintage condition for its great age, but with its flaws comes a beautiful and genuinely aged finish. It has plenty of surface crazing to its glaze, loss of gilt to its finial handle, gentle tea-staining and discolouration in patches to both the inside of the lid and both faces of the under-plate along with a little white paint in a small patch to its decoration.

It has a discoloured nibble to the inside of its lid, though not visible unless upended and a larger chip to the base of its under-plate. This is visible on its its exterior face. Please see images 7 and 8 for clarity. While quite clearly this piece is not in 'pristine' condition, it is aged to perfection and absolutely more than usable and displays very well. Please view all images to ensure you are happy with its very used/aged finish.

Buyers Guide:
It is very important to note, that all the pieces Roof + Roof sell are genuine pieces of age, each having a rich and varied past and are never sold as in new condition. With this in mind, minor blemishes, surface scratches, manufacturing flaws and a general sense of their age and history are naturally to be expected. We always try, to the best of our ability to honestly and clearly communicate an items condition, both in our description and photography, highlighting anything over and above what we perceive as ‘general age related wear and tear'. We kindly ask you look closely at all our photos, using the zoom facility, as these naturally form part of the item's description.

Please be aware that your monitor, tablet, or mobile device may emulate colours/tones differently 'on screen' to that of the actual physical item, all of which are photographed and shown to the best of our abilities. Any item/prop shown in our photography is used for styling purposes only. Prior to purchasing, if you would like further clarification on any item, then we are always happy to help in any way possible.
