Rare c.1914 William Adams Chinese Bird Chinoiserie Waisted Tankard Mug

£45.00

This beautiful and scarcely found English chinoiserie patterned tankard jug, has such a charming waisted shape and is in immaculate condition throughout. It features a rich and highly detailed 'cracked ice' pattern, depicting a oriental group scene with a pagoda.

We love how blue and white china is perfect for mixing with existing tableware, or of course, ideal for adding to a 'picture perfect' dresser display.

Key Points:
• A gorgeous antique tankard jug
• Crisp transfer printed 'Chinese bird' design
• A country cottage staple, ideal for dining or display!
• Made by William Adams, Stoke-on-Trent, England
• Fully marked to base with Reg. No. 623294

Year of manufacture:
c 1914

Origin:
England

History:
Chinese Bird aka 'Bird and Basket' was introduced by William Adams in 1780 at his 'Greengates' factory, gaining competition for the chinoiserie market, being a copy of a Chinese pattern, one of the first of its style produced in England.

The pattern was revived around 1910 and once registered in 1913 the back-stamp then carried the registration number #623294. These pieces were printed in dark cobalt blue, similar to the original ware, but used only the ‘cracked ice’ background, not the original basket weave pattern.

Approximate Measurements:
H: 10cm x 11.5cm W with handle

Condition:
In immaculate antique condition throughout, with minimal signs of wear or use. It simply displays a few very light marks inside which are very faint along with very light fine crazing.

Buyer’s Guide:
It is very important to note, that all the pieces Roof + Roof sell are genuine pieces of age, each having a rich and varied past and are never sold as in new condition. With this in mind, minor blemishes, surface scratches, manufacturing flaws and a general sense of their age and history are naturally to be expected. We always try, to the best of our ability to honestly and clearly communicate an items condition, both in our description and photography, highlighting anything over and above what we perceive as ‘general age related wear and tear'. We kindly ask you look closely at all our photos, using the zoom facility, as these naturally form part of the item's description.
