Stunning Cobalt Blue Art Deco Chameleon Ware Vase by George Clews
This strikingly beautiful, 1930s art pottery vase, is by acclaimed Staffordshire ceramics company, George Clews & Co and part of their very desirable Chameleon Ware range. Highly collectible and petite in statue, we adore its vibrant, cobalt blue, semi-matt underglaze, mottled with organic moss green, a scarce piece that is pleasingly tactile when held.
Whilst clearly classically Art Deco in style, it is also very modernist in its appeal and would make a beautiful addition to any vintage or more contemporary space.
Key Points:
• A stunning Art Deco vase
• Tactile semi-matt glaze in cobalt blue
• Organic moss green accents in overglaze
• Made George Clews & Co Ltd, (Chameleon Ware), Stoke-on-Trent
• Fully marked to base
• Immaculate vintage condition throughout
History:
Clews’ most prolific art pottery was Chameleon Ware. His hand-painted wares were introduced in the early 1920s and remained in production up to c.1939. It included a wide range of ornamental wares in Egyptian and Persian-inspired shapes that reflected popular interest in the archeological discoveries of the 1920s. In 1926 a gold medal and diploma were awarded at the Philadelphia Exhibition for "originality of design" and a year later, the Pottery Gazette reported that after fourteen years of experiment and experience with Chameleon ware, "Clews offer a line of ornamental wares which, from the dual aspect of price and quality, is exceptional".
Year of manufacture:
c. 1935
Approximate Measurements:
H: 11.5cm (4.5")
W: 6cm (2.35") at rim
Condition:
In immaculate condition throughout, free of signs of wear, use or damage. As with pieces of age it displays some very light surface crazing to its glaze.

Buyers Guide:
It is very important to note, that all the pieces Roof + Roof sell are genuine pieces of age, each having a rich and varied past and are never sold as in new condition. With this in mind, minor blemishes, surface scratches, manufacturing flaws and a general sense of their age and history are naturally to be expected. We always try, to the best of our ability to honestly and clearly communicate an items condition, both in our description and photography, highlighting anything over and above what we perceive as ‘general age related wear and tear'. We kindly ask you look closely at all our photos, using the zoom facility, as these naturally form part of the item's description.
Please be aware that your monitor, tablet, or mobile device may emulate colours/tones differently 'on screen' to that of the actual physical item, all of which are photographed and shown to the best of our abilities. Any item/prop shown in our photography is used for styling purposes only. Prior to purchasing, if you would like further clarification on any item, then we are always happy to help in any way possible.
