Unusual African Woven Leather & Woven Reed Tray

£30.00

This most unusual, 'butter soft' vintage leather tray, features intricate, geometric, woven reed detailing, perfect for any bohemian or eclectically style interior!

Produced in Sierra Leone, Africa, we think it would be beautiful used as serving tray, a way to display books or ceramics or perhaps used as natural 'backdrop' propped on a shelf or console.

Key Points:
• A most unusual African leather tray
• Handmade in an octagonal shaped with a shallow lip
• Intricate woven rush/reed woven detailing believed to be Mandingo leatherwork
• Soft dark brown leather believed to be over a wooden frame
• Marked Sierra Leone '1973' to its reverse

History:
Though marked '1973' we have found a handful of very similar examples that predate this by some way, dating to the beginning of the 20th. This style of woven and tooled leatherwork very closely resembles the so called ‘Mandingo’ leatherwork of Sierra Leone.

Year of manufacture:
c. 1973, though with the potential to be much earlier

Approximate Measurements:
34.5cm L / 26cm W / 1.45cm H

Condition:
This beautiful piece clearly has been skilfully crafted from fine materials. It displays a beautifully worn patina to the leather, in a rich red-brown tone that feels gorgeous to the touch. It has three small areas on its edges showing wear and tearing to the leather, likely from it drying out over the years, along with one very small, insignificant puncture hole to its top face (please refer to images 8 and 9 for clarity). Further light surface marks and scratches are in line with age.

Buyers Guide:
It is very important to note, that all the pieces Roof + Roof sell are genuine pieces of age, each having a rich and varied past and are never sold as in new condition. With this in mind, minor blemishes, surface scratches, manufacturing flaws and a general sense of their age and history are naturally to be expected. We always try, to the best of our ability to honestly and clearly communicate an items condition, both in our description and photography, highlighting anything over and above what we perceive as ‘general age related wear and tear'. We kindly ask you look closely at all our photos, using the zoom facility, as these naturally form part of the item's description.

Please be aware that your monitor, tablet, or mobile device may emulate colours/tones differently 'on screen' to that of the actual physical item, all of which are photographed and shown to the best of our abilities. Any item/prop shown in our photography is used for styling purposes only. Prior to purchasing, if you would like further clarification on any item, then we are always happy to help in any way possible.
