Vintage Native American Santo Domingo (Kewa) Hand Coiled Squat Bowl

£325.00

This absolutely beautiful and most collectible small pottery bowl, from the Santo Domingo (Kewa) Pueblo, New Mexico, was acquired by us along with other items, from the estate of an English collector. Unsigned, as is the case with older pieces it is believed to date to the mid-century (c.1940-1950) and is a very collectible heritage piece, most likely made for the early tourist market of them day. We adore its hand coil form, shaped from the local clay of the area then, further hand-painted with black motifs over a cream ground.

A beautiful item for any collector of Native American arts, or a special piece to gift or display.

Good to know:
Santo Domingo (Kewa) pueblo pottery can be fairly easily distinguished, by its buff coloured clay, cream slip, and black geometric designs. Their geometric patterns, pay particular attention to the negative spaces of the piece and remain to this day among the most conservative of all the Pueblos, accounting for the infrequent use of figurative designs in their art. This bowl as, do all the items we have from this estate, note the area in which it originated, in pencil to its base. The Santa Domingo Pueblo is south of Santa Fe.

Key Points:
• An beautiful Native American offerings bowl
• Stunning traditional hand-painted design
• Hand Coiled Clay construction
• Produced in the Santo Domingo (Kewa) Pueblo, New Mexico
• In excellent vintage condition throughout

c. 1940-50s

Buyer’s Guide:
It is very important to note, that all the pieces Roof + Roof sell are genuine pieces of age, each having a rich and varied past and are never sold as in new condition. With this in mind, minor blemishes, surface scratches, manufacturing flaws and a general sense of their age and history are naturally to be expected. We always try, to the best of our ability to honestly and clearly communicate an items condition, both in our description and photography, highlighting anything over and above what we perceive as ‘general age related wear and tear'. We kindly ask you look closely at all our photos, using the zoom facility, as these naturally form part of the item's description.
