This large, round Victorian serving plate made by Brown-Westhead Moore and Co, is such a beautiful and scarcely found example!

Produced exclusively for the luxury London department store 'Mortlocks', it has clearly been very well cared for, over the years, offering just the right amount of graceful patina.

We love its gently scalloped edge and delicate floral trim, adorned with a rich Chinoiserie style pattern, depicting Quails and exotic foliage in deep cobalt blue

Reassuringly heavyweight, its classic blue & white 'good looks' makes it as beautiful as it is useable and is sure to grace any dining table or dresser in style!

Key Points:
• A large antique Ironstone serving plate
• Transfer printed in a superb inky cobalt blue over a cool white ground
• Produced in Hanley, Staffordshire, by Brown-Westhead Moore and Co (Cauldon)
• Impressed to base with Diamond Registration Mark (E May / E-1881)
• Impressed with Cauldon makers stamp along with Mortlocks Garland transfer printed stamp and pattern name

History:
Brown-Westhead, Moore & Co were manufacturers of high grade earthenware and porcelain (c1862-1904) specialising in wares for export and often ware was marked by/for the seller. They gained international recognition and won numerous awards, including medals at the Great Exhibition in London in 1851 and the Paris Exhibition in 1867.

The company also supplied to royalty, including Queen Victoria and King Edward VII. They operated under various names throughout history including Ridgway, Cauldon Ceramics and Cauldon Limited, and were based at Cauldon Place, Hanley, Staffordshire.

This beautiful example, was produced for Mortlocks Department Store, (The Mortlock China Company) who were considered by many as the most important china retailer in London in the early nineteenth century.

This piece is impressed (though rather hard to read without a loupe) with its official diamond shaped, 'Registration Mark' to its reverse, so we can confidently date the piece to May, 1881.

Year of manufacture:
May 1881

Pattern:
Quails

Approximate Measurements:
31cm (12" approx)

Condition:
In very good antique condition, displaying only a couple of historic nibbles to its edge (please refer to images 9 and 10 for clarity), some small patches of discolourations to its rim and back face, and a few minor rough patches from its kiln stilts from manufacture. Overall, there are light signs of use, in the from of a few utensil marks, however we feel that these certainly do not detract from the pattern or overall look of the plate and are only visible if the piece is tipped towards the light.

Buyers Guide:
It is very important to note, that all the pieces Roof + Roof sell are genuine pieces of age, each having a rich and varied past and are never sold as in new condition. With this in mind, minor blemishes, surface scratches, manufacturing flaws and a general sense of their age and history are naturally to be expected. We always try, to the best of our ability to honestly and clearly communicate an items condition, both in our description and photography, highlighting anything over and above what we perceive as ‘general age related wear and tear'. We kindly ask you look closely at all our photos, using the zoom facility, as these naturally form part of the item's description.

Please be aware that your monitor, tablet, or mobile device may emulate colours/tones differently 'on screen' to that of the actual physical item, all of which are photographed and shown to the best of our abilities. Any item/prop shown in our photography is used for styling purposes only. Prior to purchasing, if you would like further clarification on any item, then we are always happy to help in any way possible.
