Kathie Winkle began her career at Shorter and Son in Stoke-on-Trent, where she was trained as a paintress. She later joined James Broadhurst & Sons, around 1950, but by 1958 she was producing her own unique designs. She soon became responsible for all Broadhurst’s pattern designs until the mid 1970s.

Often inspired by the exotic, Kathie's original designs were produced using a 'stamp and fill' technique. A black outline was printed on the unglazed ceramic and hand decorators would then paint the designs. This made each piece, look and feel both handcrafted and individual and today her carefree, mid-century patterns are highly sort after.
