Characterful RARE EARLY Minton Ironstone Lidded Tureen
This very characterful and most honest example, of high quality English Ironstone china and although clearly very well used, is a very rare EARLY example. Produced by Minton, in their Delft pattern, it features luscious, cobalt blue florals around a stylish central jardiniere.
A must for any lover of 'blue & white', its rich design is set against a blue tinged ironstone ground, with a large ‘ornate’ looped handle, flared pedestal foot, completed with a stunning patterned interior. It is an extremely heavyweight item.
We absolutely adore this piece and feel even with its obvious wear and cosmetic 'flaws', it is as functional now, as the day it was produced. Perfect for stylish Sunday dinners, family celebrations, or as a display piece on a farmhouse dresser!
Key Points:
• A characterful antique lidded tureen
• Deep squat shape, pedestal foot and large decorative finial handle
• Stunning flow blue floral pattern
• A RARE EARLY example, by Minton, Stoke-on-Trent
• Fully marked to base as below
• Its gentle pricing is reflective of its condition
History:
Synonymous with high quality wares, the Minton factory was founded in Stoke-on-Trent in 1796 by Thomas Minton. He made Minton 'wares' famous for their cream-coloured and blue-printed earthenware, majolica and bone china. His factory was unmatched in the Victorian period for its "art" porcelains and he also made popular the famous 'Willow' pattern.
Year of manufacture:
19th September 1871
Pattern:
Delft
Origin:
England
Marks:
It is fully marked to its base with their printed stamp, diamond registered date stamp, impressed 'Mintons' mark, pattern name and BB for Best Body (first quality).
Approximate Measurements:
29.5cm W / 22cm D / 7cm H to rim / 15.5cm approx to top of handle
Condition:
As detailed above and in all our imagery, this piece is not without flaws, age and characterful patina. Please do refer to all the associated photos for clarity, using Etsy's zoom facility, so you are 100% happy with its condition.
This piece has clearly, been very well used over its long life, and has likely at some point been the victim of an accident that has resulted in two stable hairlines to its interior base. With this, comes numerous historic 'tea-stained' areas and small chips, visible to its base, underside and foot, also partially visible from its exterior face (though, their aged colour and the busy flow blue pattern somewhat disguise them).
Its base has discolouration and heavy utensil marks, both owing to these flaws and from obvious repeated use. In contrast, its lid is very clean and damage free (perhaps its lid was less used?), with all but a few spots of discolouration, not at all uncommon in Ironstone of this great age.
All things considered, we do think that it is still an absolutely stunning piece, flaws and all, and too precious to simply be discarded as 'broken'... it is still VERY FIRMLY RESOLUTE, heavyweight and with many, many years left to serve! The most perfect piece, if you want the genuine weathered patina of something that is 152 years old! We know we do!

Buyers Guide:
It is very important to note, that all the pieces Roof + Roof sell are genuine pieces of age, each having a rich and varied past and are never sold as in new condition. With this in mind, minor blemishes, surface scratches, manufacturing flaws and a general sense of their age and history are naturally to be expected. We always try, to the best of our ability to honestly and clearly communicate an items condition, both in our description and photography, highlighting anything over and above what we perceive as ‘general age related wear and tear'. We kindly ask you look closely at all our photos, using the zoom facility, as these naturally form part of the item's description.
Please be aware that your monitor, tablet, or mobile device may emulate colours/tones differently 'on screen' to that of the actual physical item, all of which are photographed and shown to the best of our abilities. Any item/prop shown in our photography is used for styling purposes only. Prior to purchasing, if you would like further clarification on any item, then we are always happy to help in any way possible.
