This most handsome and characterful Ironstone serving plate, or charger, is an HUGE, RARE, EARLY (c. 1830-50s) and VERY HEAVYWEIGHT example, solidly crafted and in truly amazing condition for its great age.

Measuring a massive 46.5cm wide (18”), English Ironstone china is 'ever classic'- this featuring a striking Willow pattern, in a rich, cobalt blue hue. Set against a gorgeous cool-white background, it is edged to its outer with intricate Chinoiserie scrolls, completed with an impressive soft, yet detailed willow pattern interior.

We adore this ever popular design, (one of three such items we currently have for sale within our shop) and feel this beautiful example, is as functional now as the day it was produced. Use for stylish Sunday dinners, Thanksgiving, lavish family celebrations and weddings, as a beautiful 'blue & white 'display piece on a dresser, or styled in a farmhouse or country kitchen.

Key Points:

• A huge!, early and heavyweight serving plate/charger
• Beautiful cobalt blue willow pattern design with deep central well
• Characterful patina, found only in genuine pieces of age
• Highly likely to have been produced in Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire, though unmarked which was very common

History:
This widely collected pattern comes in varying Chinoiserie designs, inspired by fashionable hand-painted blue-and-white wares imported from China.

So the poem goes:
Two birds flying high,

A Chinese vessel, sailing by.

A bridge with three men, sometimes four,

A willow tree, hanging o’er.

A Chinese temple, there it stands,

Built upon the river sands.

An apple tree, with apples on,

A crooked fence to end my song.

Year of manufacture:

c. 1830s-1850
A very early example, many of which were unmarked, pre-dating common marking methods of later years.

Pattern:
Willow

Origin:
England

Approximate Measurements:
W: 46.5cm (18")
D: 37cm ( 14.5")
2.3kg Unpackaged weight approx.

Condition:
In truly excellent condition throughout, unmarked as was very common, other than an impressed number 16 to its reverse and we're proud to say it displays beautifully! It has a remarkably clean transfer printed pattern, though as to be expected, showing some small areas of characterful wear and age related crazing, from its many, many years of domestic use.

It has a stunning, gently aged patina, with fine overall crazing, only found in Ironstone of genuine age, with small areas of rub and discolouration to its edges and a couple of small yellow-ish stains to its front face, highlighting once again, its great age and back-story.

The only very minor flaws of note, are some spots of discolouration to its edges, utensil marks and pitting from manufacture to its front face and edges, however quite unusually it is completely FREE of chips, nibbles or flaws of note.

Buyers Guide:
It is very important to note, that all the pieces Roof + Roof sell are genuine pieces of age, each having a rich and varied past and are never sold as in new condition. With this in mind, minor blemishes, surface scratches, manufacturing flaws and a general sense of their age and history are naturally to be expected. We always try, to the best of our ability to honestly and clearly communicate an items condition, both in our description and photography, highlighting anything over and above what we perceive as ‘general age related wear and tear'. We kindly ask you look closely at all our photos, using the zoom facility, as these naturally form part of the item's description.

Please be aware that your monitor, tablet, or mobile device may emulate colours/tones differently 'on screen' to that of the actual physical item, all of which are photographed and shown to the best of our abilities. Any item/prop shown in our photography is used for styling purposes only. Prior to purchasing, if you would like further clarification on any item, then we are always happy to help in any way possible.
